Estonia will not send ambassador to Belarus

Tallinn does not recognize the results of the presidential elections in Belarus and see no reason to send a new ambassador there.
The Estonian authorities have decided not to send their new ambassador, Jaak Lensment, to Minsk. This was announced on Saturday, July 17, by Estonian Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets in her newspaper column Eesti Paevaleht.
“It would be completely inappropriate, since neither Estonia nor the EU will recognize the result of the presidential elections in Belarus, which took place in August last year under the sign of massive fraud,” she wrote.
In early July, Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid appointed Jaak Lensment as the new ambassador to Belarus. Estonian Prime Minister Kaya Kallas said that she considers it important for the republic to have a diplomatic mission in Minsk.
Let us remind you that recently a diplomatic scandal took place between Estonia and Russia: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation announced that they were expelling the consul of Estonia, who was detained in St. Petersburg for alleged espionage. In reply Estonia expelled Russian diplomat.
