The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russia’s provisional plenipotentiary on Wednesday to protest Russia’s interference of the GPS signal in Estonia.
Foreign Minister Margus Cahkna said that Russia’s interference with satellite navigation is becoming stronger over time, causing confusion and having a major impact on civil aviation.
“Such activity is against the rules of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on radio communications, which prohibit this type of infringement, and we communicated this to a temporary authorized registrar of Russia,” said the minister.
“GPS signal jamming is an element of Russia’s hybrid activity that disrupts our normal daily life and threatens the security of our allies, similar to the violent incidents, cyberattacks and disinfestation campaigns launched by Russia way,” Cahkna said.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia said that the jamming of GPS signals caused by Russia has seriously damaged air traffic in our region, which is especially visible with the suspension of flights between Helsinki and Tartu.
Cahkna discussed the danger involved in blocking GPS signals with representatives of the member states of the European Union and NATO allies, and last week it was also discussed at the North Atlantic Council.
Russian hybrid attacks in Europe and elsewhere are becoming a pressing issue. Several European countries have summoned senior Russian diplomats this week to protest Moscow’s hybrid and cyber attacks.
