Estonia is more business-friendly :: Dienas Bizness

Estonians have learned to set their priorities in a timely manner, focusing for years on the development of the information technology (IT) field, which has currently helped create a favorable environment in the country for both entrepreneurs and society in its together, says Sanita Meijere, head of SK ID Solutions Latvia.

There is both a very high quality tax administration system and fair competition in Estonia, as well as more opportunities for remote communication with the country, says S. Meijere, adding that Estonia is a small country with a small population, but with a clear focus. Estonians have worked for years to prove to the world that they are an IT superpower: they have attracted investment, created credibility and created marketing of IT companies, which has led to success, observes the head of SK ID Solutions Latvia, pointing out that in the meantime, it was not possible to define the priority years for Latvia.

“We now have six whole ones – which, in my opinion, are too many to be able to really focus and be the best in one of the fields,” says S. Meijere.

Extract from the interview

The last few years have been quite busy for entrepreneurs all over the world. How are you this time?

It must be said that this time it has shown the world that IT and digitalization play a very important role in ensuring the continuity of the business of any company in the face of crises and restrictions. As our solutions largely make it possible or easier to do many things remotely, we have to say that we did very well during the pandemic. To support entrepreneurs and deliver our services in the necessary volume, we have nearly halved the number of our employees and increased our turnover over the past two years.

You said you are currently working on integrating the Smart-ID solution in Barbados. Why this country and do you plan to offer the tool in another market in the near future?

In Barbados, a public procurement was announced for the need for such an identification tool and our local partner, knowing our experience in the Baltic States, contacted us to participate and we agreed. As for the future, we are constantly looking for opportunities to proactively develop and offer our solution to overseas markets, so other countries will definitely follow Barbados. Our main target group at the moment are the countries of the European Union, because there is only one regulation in this region and we do not have to prove to anyone who is qualified and who is not. Everything is clear to everyone, because the rules of the game are the same. At the moment, we are looking primarily at the Benelux countries and Germany. We also see that some services, such as time stamping, also have great potential in Sweden, Finland and Norway. Conquering the market with Smart-ID in these countries may not be that easy, because Scandinavians themselves have such a powerful tool as Bank ID, which is also supported by local banks.
