Tallinn did not extend the residence permit of the Primate of the Estonian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Evgeniy (Reshetnikov), who is a citizen of Russia. This was reported by the telegram channel “DW* main”.
The Metropolitan must leave the country by February 6.
As the Estonian Police and Border Guard Department said, Reshetnikov is being expelled from the country because of his statements about the Russian special operation in Ukraine, which “threaten national security.”
“Through his public actions and statements, he supported the aggressor and did not change his behavior despite warnings,” a department spokesman said.
The expulsion of Metropolitan Eugene does not constitute interference in the internal affairs of the Church, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Estonia emphasized, in turn. Lauri Läänemets.
“The Estonian state in no way interferes in the internal affairs of the Church. The church can continue its normal activities. However, the Church will have the opportunity to find a new leader who breathes in the same rhythm as the whole of Estonia,” he noted.
EADaily recently reported the expulsion of an 82-year-old scientist from Latvia Boris Katkov. The decision is purely political in nature and is aimed at intimidating the Russian-speaking community of Latvia and eradicating any “dissent,” as stated in this regard in a commentary from the Russian Embassy in Latvia.
“Another provocative act of the Latvian authorities causes extreme indignation. This time, the victim of the demonstrative reprisal of politicians fixated on Russophobia was a Russian military pensioner, a prominent figure in the compatriot movement, chairman of the board of the Latvian-Russian Cooperation Association (LRAS) B. G. Katkov,” the embassy noted.
