Esteban Ocon takes seventh place from Qatar. He really deserved it for the demanding race on the hot Losail circuit, because at times he was in complete agony in the cockpit. After the checkered flag, he revealed that he even threw up.
In Fuji 2007, Mark Webber also went through something similar. However, he did not retain the contents of his stomach for different reasons than Esteban Ocon on Sunday. The French pilot was troubled by the extreme heat in the cockpit, but not only him, but also the rest of the starting field. On Sunday, it really showed who was training honestly and maybe even beyond what his coach preached to him.
Esteban Ocon revealed that under standard conditions he wouldn’t mind driving two grand prix in a row, but it just wasn’t possible in Qatar. He stood in front of the journalists shaken and visibly weakened.
“Yes, I threw up. I don’t know when, but around the fifteenth-sixteenth round. It took about two laps,” he admitted Esteban Ocon after a cautious question from a Sky Sports reporter. “I was throwing up and I’m saying to myself, Doriti, excuse the expression, but I was thinking that it was going to be a really long race. I somehow managed to get it under control mentally. I tried to concentrate on my work, but I have never experienced anything like this in the past.”
“I was always able to cover the distance of two grand prix in the car, I trained for that. However, today’s hot air and the way the power unit burns you in the back… I don’t think we insulated the cockpit very well. It must have been about 80 degrees in the car today,” he shook his head at the nearly two-hour stay in the Qatari sauna. “I’m glad that we’re not coming back here until December in a year.”
The fact that they could not drive more than eighteen laps on one set of tires certainly did not help the pilots. It meant for them that they could really go all out for most of the grand prix and, as they say, literally have a blast.
Ocon he doesn’t attribute his nausea to spending all of Sunday in qualifying mode. “I don’t think that would be a problem. Take Abu Dhabi or Jeddah, things like that are standard on the agenda and we’ve always been fine. Here, however, it was ten degrees more.”
The pilots kept cool during the race as best they could. Ocon he also helped with his hands. “At one point on the straights I was chasing the air with my hands and trying to direct it to the helmet. The more I breathed to get myself together before the turns, the more burning I felt in my helmet. Honestly, it was horrible. These were my hardest fought points but I’m glad we maximized our result. Seventh place is very good for us.”
