2024 was concluded in the Ministry of National Defense (KAM). list of conscripts. Deputy Minister of National Defense Žilvinas Tomkus emphasizes that this is probably the last time when the list of conscripts is drawn up on the basis of a lottery.
“I don’t know if this tradition will continue next year if the conscription law changes are adopted. It is possible that this event will be the last – in such a form that we are holding a lottery”, Ž said to journalists on Thursday. Tomkus.
“We hope that the Seimas will approve the proposals on the amendment of conscription laws, which would continue the changes due to universal conscription,” added the vice-minister.
According to the army, the list of conscripts will be presented to the public next week, by January 10.
It is noted that the list of conscripts is compiled based on the population register data. Also, according to available data from other sources, conscripts who have not been drafted are identified.
The list of conscripts will consist of about 27.2 thousand. persons. 3,845 young people are planned to be called to the service, and another 210 high school students or graduates could serve in the Young Officers’ Commanders Training (JKVM).
In total, there are about 79.5 thousand potential conscripts aged 18-23. At that time, 24-26 years old. It is estimated that there are about 4.5 thousand conscripts who have completed or postponed their studies.
It is reminded that those studying in the country’s higher education institutions will not be included in the list, but will be included once after graduation. It is noted that those who wish to fulfill their constitutional duty have the right to suspend their studies for the period of the NPPKT or to study and graduate from the JKVM within three years or to perform voluntary non-permanent military service in the National Defense Volunteer Forces.
It is reported that the start of service of the first conscripts is planned at the beginning of February – in the Air Defense Battalion of the Lithuanian Air Force in Radvilišky.
ELTA reminds that a few weeks ago, the Seimas approved the reform of mandatory initial military service prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Next, it was decided to consider the draft reform in the spring session.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the changes in the laws should not only increase the attractiveness of the service, train more junior commanders and specialists that the Lithuanian army lacks, increase the number of active army personnel reserve, but also enable the transition to universal conscription in the long run.
The Ministry presented the changes in the draft reform at the beginning of the year. One of the fundamental changes is the possibility of shortening the service time. As before, conscripts would be called to serve for a period of 9 months. However, it is expected that, taking into account the needs of the Lithuanian army, the service period could be shortened to half a year.
In addition, young people who have acquired the relevant specialties could be invited to perform a 3-month service and thus acquire the necessary basic military training. Such an alternative could be used by aviation, avionics specialists, engineers, doctors, etc.
