Remember that emergency alerts pass through the filters and restrictions (side button mute mode) that you have set on your phone.
On iPhone
On the Apple devicesgovernment alerts are enabled by default.
When you receive a government alert, you hear a distinctive sound that resembles an alarm. To turn these alerts on or off, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings > Notifications.
- Scroll to the bottom of the screen.
- Under Government Alerts, turn alerts on or off.

On Android
How to enable or disable Emergency, Weather and Amber Alerts on your Android phone?
- Go to Settings on your Android device.
- Go to Notifications.
- Scroll down to Wireless Emergency Alerts (or another section depending on your version of Android until you find Wireless Emergency Alerts).
- Under Allow Alerts, tap the slider to the left to turn them off or to the right to turn them on.
On Android, other settings are also available, such as:
- Extreme threats

Amber Alert originates from the United States. It was born following the kidnapping of a nine-year-old girl, Amber Hagerman, on January 13, 1996 in the city of Arlington, Texas.
