ESRB ratings will finally begin to warn players about loot boxes and Gacha systems

For some time now, the gaming community has pushed the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) towards a more serious attitude to loot boxes, gach systems, and other forms of randomized monetization. The ESRB took several half-steps, including adding descriptions of gambling content and in-game purchase alerts, but they did not have a special warning about randomized content delivery systems such as loot boxes.

Fortunately, this has finally changed. Over the past couple of years, additional Interactive Elements notifications have been added to the ESRB rankings to alert potential players of what they might encounter when connecting over the Internet. In the future, ESRB will receive a new interactive element – “in-game purchases (including random items).”

Here is a description of the new ESRB warning:

This new interactive element, “in-game purchases (including random items),” will be assigned to any game that contains in-game offers for the purchase of digital goods or rewards for real currency (or virtual coins or other forms of in-game currency) that can be purchased for real-world currency) that the player does not know about before buying certain digital goods or rewards (for example, loot boxes, item packages).

“In-game purchases (including random items)” will be assigned to all games that include purchases with any randomized items, including loot chests, gacha decks, item or card decks, prize roulettes, treasure chests, and much more. Games notified of in-game purchases (including random items) may also include other non-randomized paid items.
