Esports Leagues Shifting to Third-Party Convenors: Overwatch League Rumored to Follow Suit

Lately, we’ve seen a number of different official esports leagues wanting to be run by third-party convenors rather than publishers of the games themselves.More recently, the competitive Rainbow Six: Siege is run by BLAST, ifGGReconIf the latest reports are acceptable, then the Overwatch League could be next to join the fray.

Amid the turmoil of this season, teams were asked to vote on whether the league should return in 2024 and beyond, or receive a $6 million termination fee, now referring to the 2024 season, which, if it goes ahead, will be run by a third-party convener.

It is mentioned in the report that ESL FACEIT Group will take over the business in North America and Europe, and WDG Esports will be in charge of the Asian business. However, since none of this has been confirmed by Activision Blizzard, it’s worth treating this information with caution.
