ESPN, Stephen A. Smith Close to Signing New Deal

ESPN and Stephen A. Smith Close to a Deal that Could Expand Beyond Sports

Stephen A. Smith, the fiery and popular ESPN commentator, may soon be expanding his reach beyond the world of sports. Sources close to the negotiations say Smith and ESPN are nearing a new contract that could see him developing concepts for Disney’s broader entertainment properties.

According to insiders, both sides are optimistic about reaching an agreement in the coming weeks. This potential partnership could open doors for Smith to delve into late-night programming, political commentary, or other areas where his larger-than-life personality could thrive.

"ESPN and Disney have been in talks with Smith to devise a new pact that could involve creating a sort of “first-look” agreement for Smith-backed concepts across Disney’s general-entertainment properties,” said one source familiar with the talks.

This move underscores ESPN’s commitment to locking down its top talent. The network has aggressively pursued high-profile figures like Troy Aikman and Joe Buck from Fox, signed the outspoken Pat McAfee, and partnered with former Philadelphia Eagles player Jason Kelce for a late-night series.

Smith, known for his passionate and often controversial opinions on ESPN’s "First Take," has publicly expressed his desire to become the highest-paid personality at the network, which also boasts prominent commentators like Scott Van Pelt and Mike Greenberg.

While ESPN and Disney don’t comment on ongoing negotiations, a report from the Wall Street Journal in June suggested Smith was offered $18 million annually for a new multi-year deal – a significant 50% raise from his current $12 million salary. These negotiations come at a time when traditional media companies like Disney are grappling with declining revenue from linear TV as they invest heavily in streaming services and new content.

Smith’s contract is set to expire in 2025. Beyond his ESPN work, he has already dipped his toes into other entertainment avenues, appearing on NewsNation and even guest-starring on a new long-form interview show hosted by Fox News opinion leader Sean Hannity for the Fox Nation streaming service. He also hosted a late-night-styled show on ESPN+.

"He has publicly suggested he would like to be the highest-paid personality at a network that also boasts popular commentators like Scott Van Pelt and Mike Greenberg," the Wall Street Journal reported, highlighting the potential for a major shift in Smith’s career trajectory.

This latest development suggests Smith aims to leverage his brand and influence beyond the realm sports, possibly diversifying his portfolio and securing a prominent place within Disney’s vast media landscape.
