The Mayor of Espinho, Pinto Moreira, considers the ban on the holding of fairs, in the scope of the measures against Covid-19, “absolutely unacceptable and a tremendous injustice”.
Every Monday, one of the largest weekly fairs in the country takes place in the city, with around 800 marketers.
With the measures recently imposed by the Government, to try to stop the number of infections by Covid-19, it will stop happening in the coming weeks.
“They are small traders, producers and farmers who depend on this activity for their financial sustainability”, said this morning, Pinto Moreira.
“What will be done with these vendors and their families”, questioned the mayor, reiterating that it is a measure “absolutely inconceivable and a tremendous injustice”.
He recalls that marketers have been “extremely strict in complying with the contingency plan that is in force at the weekly fair in Espinho”, observing social distance, hand hygiene and the use of the mask, “everything has been accomplished”.
“It is therefore an unfair measure, because traders were the first to adhere to the strict application of the contingency plan,” added the mayor.
The president recalls that this measure does not apply in other sectors of activity. “The fairgrounds are outdoors, in corridors and wide spaces. We do not see that this exists in other sectors of activity such as closed commercial spaces where there is a greater circulation of people, with less compliance with the rules of social distance “.
“It is in these closed spaces that the virus is likely to spread more quickly,” he said.
