On Tuesday, 475 new corona infections were registered in Norway. We have to go back to May 26 to find a higher number of infected registered in one day. Then it was 499.
The infection trend in Norway is now rising, and the infection has increased in the last week in the country’s two largest cities, Oslo and Bergen.
In large parts of Europe, there is a fourth wave of infections.
– All measures can be applied again
Assistant health director, Espen Rostrup Nakstad, says that the numbers are likely to continue to increase nationally.
– It is likely that we will see higher infection rates than we have been used to this summer related to the many ongoing local outbreaks in Norway, Nakstad says to ABC News.
– What does it take to avoid a major wave of infection?
– What is needed to avoid a large wave of infections in the coming weeks, while still many have not been vaccinated, is to follow our usual routines as private individuals. We should still stay home in case of illness. The municipalities must continue to test and detect infection, and in addition consider local measures that to the greatest possible extent limit the spread of infection where it occurs, the assistant health director answers.
When asked which corona measures it may be relevant to reintroduce, Nakstad answers:
– This can involve a large number of measures, in principle all infection control measures the municipality has used so far in the pandemic can be applied again. It will always be situation dependent.
Believes the vaccines will protect well
Both the Norwegian Directorate of Health and FHI believe that the vaccines will protect us against a wave of infections that has consequences similar to those we saw last autumn. Assistant director Geir Bukholm in FHI told NTB on Tuesday that they expect increased infection.
– But we do not expect that it will necessarily lead to an increase in the number who become ill from covid-19, he said.
One thing that can shake such a picture is whether there will be a new virus variant that the vaccines do not help as well against.
On Wednesday, 25 corona-infected patients were admitted to hospitals in Norway. This is an increase of six patients from the day before.
To date, 3,602,599 people have received the first dose of the corona vaccine, and 1,823,386 people have received the second dose.
