ESO Captures Stunning Image of Red Nebula and Reflection Nebulae in Latest Observations

sinarharapan.co – EUROPEAN South Observatory (ESO) shared a photo showing they managed to capture an image of a red nebula shining in light.

This nebula is known as IC1284, a large formation in the form of a cloud of ionized and self-luminous gas and dust.

The emission nebula visible in the center of this image emits red light due to active star formation processes and hydrogen fusion reactions within it.

According to ESO, this red light comes from electrons in hydrogen atoms that are excited by radiation from young stars, and then emit light at certain red wavelengths.

Astronomers succeeded in capturing IC1284 using ESO’s wide-field camera, OmegaCAM, on the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) at the Paranal Observatory, Chile.

This nebula consists of a giant cloud of gas and dust that is leading to the formation of new stars.

In ESO’s latest image, this warm red nebula is accompanied by bright stars twinkling around it, while in the bottom right corner of the image there are two blue reflection nebulae named NGC6589 and NGC6590.

Reflection nebulae like these reflect light from surrounding stars and produce an attractive blue color.

These observations were taken within the framework of the VST Photometric H alpha Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+) initiative, which is focused on understanding the birth, life and death processes of stars in visible light.
