On Gabrovo Day – May 15 – several exhibitions dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Gabrovo as a city will be opened in the House of Humor and Satire.
During the May holidays, residents of Gabrovo and guests of the city will have the opportunity to see a documentary photo exhibition from the archives of the House of Humor, many works of Gabrovo artists from the “Humor of the Nations” fund, as well as an interesting guest exhibition – a friendly greeting from neighboring Turkey. It is already arranged in hall 5 of the Merry House and awaits the most impatient visitors.
“Eskişehir greets Gabrovo” is a collection of 55 works by 15 prominent Turkish cartoonists, reported the House of Humor. The exhibition comes from the Caricature Museum at the Anatolian University in Eskisehir, with which the House of Humor has been in regular contact in recent years. The director of the museum and professor at the university, Prof. Attila User, has been a long-time participant in the International Biennale of Humor and Satire in the Arts. The original and inventive ideas of the cartoonist Attila User, combined with the mastery and talent of ceramicist Sadetin Aigun, twice impressed the international jury. In 2007, they became laureates of the Award of the Ministry of Culture for Sculpture, and in 2009, the two were awarded the Special Award for Sculpture of “Rock Materials” – Ruse.
With this exhibition, the Caricature Museum in Eskişehir is returning the visit of the House of Humor, which visited there last year with the thematic collection of Bulgarian cartoons “Eurosapiens”.
The current exhibition “Eskişehir greets Gabrovo” presents some of the best examples of Turkish caricature and traces the development of this art over the years. The collection includes works by classics in the genre such as Turhan Selcuk, Shadi Dinchag, Tan Oral, Ali Ersoy, Semih Balcioglu, etc. Their successors are the winners of numerous awards from national and international competitions: Semih Poroy, Attila User, Nezih Danyal, Fethi Develioglu, Musa Gyumyush, Hikmet Jerah. Many of the artists are known to the Veselata kashta team because they have participated over the years in the “Caricature” section of the International Biennale in Gabrovo. Common human themes and problems of modern life prevail in the cartoons: freedom, war and peace, tolerance in human relations, the influence of modern technologies, the protection of nature and the protection of the environment.
The visiting collection of the Cartoon Museum has been supplemented with another 63 works of Turkish cartoonists from the “Humor of the Nations” fund of the House of Humor and Satire. Their authors (37 in number) have participated over the years in the International Biennale of Humor and Satire in the Arts – Gabrovo.
Especially for the opening of the exhibition, Prof. Attila User will arrive in Gabrovo with his wife and will personally present to the Gabrovo public the Turkish collection and the museum he manages. However, the most impatient can see it in advance, because the House of Humor will be open to visitors during all the weekends of the public holidays in May (May 1, 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9 this year).
Eskisehir is a city in northwestern Turkey and is the main administrative center of the province of the same name. It is considered the birthplace of Nastradin Khoxha, in whose honor annual celebrations are organized (the last week of June). Anatolia University was established in 1973. In 1987, art teacher Attila User founded the Caricature Club of the university, which in 2004 grew into the Caricature Research Center with Caricature Museum. The main purpose of the museum is to promote and ensure the appearance of talented students and teachers, to organize national and international competitions, to maintain contact and carry out exchanges with related organizations, to form a fund of works and publications in the field of caricature. The cartoon museum was created and managed by the example of the Gabrovo House of Humor and Satire, from which its management drew knowledge, experience and ideas.
