Berlin (dts news agency) – The SPD co-chair Saskia Esken has pushed for a quick agreement on the “catch-up package” planned by the federal government for children and young people. “The agreement on the Corona catch-up package for children and young people is not a day too early,” said Esken of the “Rheinische Post” (Monday).
Children and young people would particularly suffer from the sometimes severe restrictions during the pandemic. “A lack of social contacts and a lack of freedom lead to sometimes considerable psychological stress in young people. It is therefore important that we implement the measures from the catch-up package as early as possible and give our children good prospects for their future, ”said the SPD leader. The program provides money, for example, for early childhood education and social support in schools, at the same time the SPD wants to “give as many young people as possible prospects in a year of voluntary service or in a student job”. “However, we will not remedy the long-term damage to children and adolescents from the corona pandemic with one-off or temporary measures. In order to cope with the consequences of the pandemic, we also have to think and act long-term, ”continued Esken. A decision on the two billion euro action program was postponed in the federal cabinet last Tuesday because there was still disagreement between the Union and the SPD about its concrete form.
