13 Sep 2023 at 00:19

Dozens of crocodiles have escaped from a breeding farm in southern China. The reptiles were able to escape due to severe flooding caused by Typhoon Haikui, which has been raging across the area for more than a week.

About 75 crocodiles fled when a lake flooded in Maoming, Guangdong province. So far 8 crocodiles have been caught. Most were shot or electrocuted for safety reasons, it writes BBC News.

Dozens of crocodiles are still missing. Authorities advise villagers to stay at home. Emergency services use sonar equipment to find the animals.

These are Siamese crocodiles of about 3 meters long. An adult specimen weighs about 75 kilos. Maoming has several crocodile farms. The animals are bred for both their skin and their meat.

Typhoon Haikui has been raging across South Asia for more than a week. The storm leaves a trail of destruction in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. Landslides and floods have occurred in several places.

Seven people have been killed in southern China, three others are still missing. Dozens of people were injured.
