“Why the hell do you want to stay in New York in the dead of summer?” Grady doesn’t exactly answer his sister’s question. She is not telling the truth: if she wants to spend, for the first time in her life, a summer alone in New York, it is to be free from the shackles of society and maternal expectations; free to be the one who sings to him and to make love in the backseat of his blue Buick with a young parking attendant, Clyde.
Grady is 17 years old. She wanders through sun-drenched New York, and in the deserted luxury family apartment. That summer, she decides, on a whim, to marry Clyde, the young guy who spits on the floor and calls her “chicken”.
