Escape from whales: fishermen fear for their boat because of panicked sea lions

See in the video: Dozens of sea lions want to save themselves on a fishing boat.

Dozens of sea lions in southern Chile attempted to escape a pack of hunting killer whales on Saturday. They panicked so much that they tried to board a fishing boat to rescue them. The fisherman Antonio Zapata said that orcas often hunted here, but that he had never seen a situation like this in the four decades that Zapata has been at sea. When the whales circled around the group of sea lions, Zapata had already had a net full of sardines under the water. Cell phone recordings show the sea lion panic setting the water around the boat in motion. According to Zapata, the 10-man crew was afraid that the boat could be damaged and they might end up in the water themselves. They then drove in the direction of an island to bring the sea lions to safety there, but the whales were in their way. The crew then drove back to the port of Talcahuano. The whales swam away, leaving the surviving sea lions behind – everything went well again.
