“Escape from the Bronx Zoo: Peacock Allegedly Attacks Man in New York City”

NEW YORKNew York City has been the scene of several brutal attacks in recent months, but one on Wednesday night was unusual after a peacock allegedly attacked a man after escaping from the Bronx Zoo. .

Neighbors called the exotic bird “fierce” after it allegedly chased the man around 8 p.m. near the corner of East 180th and Vice Avenue, just two blocks south of the zoo. He then flew towards a nearby tree in the West Farms neighborhood.

Zoo officials said the peacock is believed to be one of hundreds they keep, and they are free-roaming birds.

“The Bronx Zoo has free-roaming peacocks that live on the grounds. The birds roost in the trees at night. We are concerned that trucks and live media cameras will prevent the peacock from being able to return to the zoo on his own”, the zoo said in a statement.

The man who saw the peacock on the sidewalk said he tried to catch it and that’s when he pecked at it.

Police and firefighters arrived a short time later, and the Fire Department, (FDNY, for its acronym in English), confirmed that they responded to a call related to an animal attack and later provided medical attention to the man at the scene.

The man who encountered the bird was not seriously injured and appeared to be in good spirits after the attack.

“It just started running up the hill into traffic. You know, we had to try to keep the bird safe. We chased it, I caught it inside the gate, it got tired of the gate, and then it tried to peck me,” the man said.

Another witness said the peacock, which the community has named Raúl, then flew to safety in the tree, about 10 feet above the ground.

The Bronx Zoo said the peacocks sleep in the trees and hope the bird will come down soon. A zoo official said there were no plans to send a team to recover the bird, but asked others to refrain from shining lights on it.
