A new card of contention added to the file of tension between the United States and Russia, which is accumulating day after day with more cards.
With the developments taking place in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, since Azerbaijani forces took control of it last week, and the continuing waves of displacement to Armenia, both Moscow and Washington have exchanged accusations of destabilizing the South Caucasus region.
The US State Department considered that Russia had shown that it was not a reliable security partner, after Armenia accused it of not interfering when Azerbaijani forces seized Nagorno-Karabakh.
The statements angered Moscow, which quickly called on Washington to refrain from what it described as very dangerous words and actions that lead to an artificial increase in hostility against Russia in Armenia.
Will Nagorno-Karabakh become a hotspot and a new issue between Moscow and Washington? Will Armenia’s rapprochement with the United States and its distancing itself from Russia ignite another conflict in the region?
Commenting on this topic, Moscow academic and political researcher Mahmoud Al-Afandi told the programme newsroom On Sky News Arabia:
The United States seeks to strike Russia’s military side, which are the countries that have a Collective Security Organization Treaty with Russia. The United States failed to isolate Russia politically following the Russian special operation in Ukraine. The United States seeks to deepen the crisis and hostility between Russia and Armenia. American intervention between Russia and Armenia does not serve the interests of the region, but it is a way to destroy the Collective Security Organization. Washington is adopting the so-called domino theory by using President Pashinyan to expel Russia and take over the rest of the countries.
As for former CIA officer Scott Olinger, he told: newsroom From Topton, Pennsylvania:
The United States does not seek to create a new conflict in the region. Under Biden, the United States is working to improve relations with Armenia to remove it from Russia’s orbit and to weaken the Russian position towards the war in Ukraine. Excluding the possibility of American military support for launching a military attack to restore the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Biden’s policy hopes for a political alliance in the region that pushes Russia out of the region. The United States must be aware and pay attention to the nature of the historical and ancient relationship between Russia and Armenia.
