Escalating Knife Violence in New York City: Man Slashes Three NYPD Officers with Machete in Brooklyn

A man slashed three NYPD officers with a machete as they tried to arrest him yesterday afternoon at an apartment in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Police were called to an apartment on New York Ave. near Beverly Road around 3:20 p.m. Monday about a 40-year-old man who was acting erratically, NYPD said.

Officers were speaking with the man’s family and attempting to arrest him when he slashed one of the officers on the right side of the head. When the other officers intervened to subdue the attacker, he injured two more police officers: one suffered a cut on the wrist and another on the shoulder.

Police eventually arrested the emotionally disturbed suspect at the scene. His name was not released and charges against him were pending last night, according to Daily News. All officers were taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.

Last week two NYPD officers responding to a domestic violence call suffered gunshot wounds in a confrontation with an ex-convict in Brooklyn.

The event occurred on the eve of the 2nd anniversary of the death of two young Hispanic police officers, Wilbert Mora and Jason Rivera, shot in a similar case while responding to a case of domestic violence in Harlem on January 21, 2022 and to whom the President Joe Biden declared “heroes.”

Also in New York City The number of stabbings and cuts continues to rise. There were 4,493 cases in 2023 until early December, an increase of 6% compared to the same period in 2022. In parallel arrests for knife crimes have increased almost 30%.

The figures do not surprise experts because knives are simply easier and cheaper to get than a gun. However, They represent a more brutal attack because they involve more physical approach to the victim.

A previous NYPD report warned last August that fatal stabbings had risen 29% that year in the city compared to before the pandemic (2019). Attacks with knives have become more frequent in various scenarios: streets, buildings, homes, buses, Metro, parties, schools and even commercial establishments and ATM areas.
