Escalating Hunger Crisis in Sudan: Over 20 Million People Suffering from Severe Food Insecurity

The United Nations World Food Program said on August 11 that dire predictions of escalating hunger in Sudan have become reality, with 20.3 million people suffering from severe acute hunger due to food insecurity caused by the conflict. Of these, 6.3 million people (13 percent of Sudan’s population) are in a state of acute hunger, falling under Stage 4 of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), one step away from famine. And the conflict continues to hinder access to humanitarian aid and force millions of people to flee their homes. Note: On April 15, the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces led by Mohammad Hamdan Dagalo clashed with the regular army, which has continued to this day.
