Escalating Clashes and Shelling in Sudan’s Capital: Army vs. Rapid Support Forces

Yesterday, Thursday, the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, witnessed an escalation of clashes and shelling between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, and while the army negotiating delegation returned from the city of Jeddah for consultations due to “fundamental differences”, the support forces confirmed that its delegation would remain in Jeddah and adhere to the negotiating track.

Al-Jazeera correspondent in Khartoum reported that intermittent sounds of heavy weapons were heard north of the city of Omdurman, amid clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. Columns of smoke were also seen in the center of Khartoum, in conjunction with the continuous flight of warplanes around the capital.

Al-Jazeera correspondent added that the Sudanese army targeted gatherings of the Rapid Support Forces with artillery shelling in the Bahri area (north of Khartoum).

Local sources also reported to Al-Jazeera that the army’s warplanes bombed a number of Rapid Support Forces sites south of Khartoum and east of the Nile. The sources stated that the army also bombarded with artillery locations of the Rapid Support Forces south of Al-Salha suburb (south of Omdurman) and Kafouri neighborhood in Khartoum North.

Meanwhile, the armed forces in Sudan confirmed their desire to reach an effective and just agreement that would stop what they called “hostilities” and pave the way for discussing post-war issues.

A statement issued by the Office of the Official Spokesman for the Armed Forces indicated that the negotiating delegation returned to Sudan yesterday, Wednesday, for consultations, with readiness to continue the talks “when they are resumed after overcoming the obstacles.”

The statement stated that “the disagreement over fundamental points – such as the evacuation of the rebels’ homes in all of the capital, and the evacuation of public facilities – led to the failure to reach an agreement to stop hostilities and the return of our delegation to Khartoum.”

For its part, the Rapid Support Forces said that its delegation is still in Jeddah, and that its adherence to this platform is a sincere expression of its commitment to its commitments to the Saudi-American mediation, as it put it.

In a statement, the Rapid Support Forces accused what they called “putschists” of obstructing any efforts to stop the war and resolve the crisis.
