A meteorite flew over the north of the Netherlands and Germany at an altitude of just 91 kilometers on Tuesday morning. The European space agency ESA has published images of the piece of space rock. It shows how the space debris flies low above the horizon, then gains height again and disappears from view.

According to ESA, it only happens a few times a year that a burning space rock is captured so clearly. Also special is that the meteorite manages to escape the earth’s atmosphere, which normally causes the debris to burn up. The organization suspects that the rock did not fly into the atmosphere long enough to burn up.
The space object was spotted by cameras from the Global Meteor Network, a project that aims to use cameras to provide the public with warnings and a picture of how meteorites move around the earth.
The size and origin of the space rock is not yet unknown.
