No longer free of charge: ING Diba wants to introduce a fee of 99 cents per month and per Girocard, such as “finance scene“Reported.

Instead of giro, Visa debit cards will be used in future, which are more compatible internationally and in online trading.

Other banks are also taking this step. Mastercard announced that it would completely abolish the Maestro Girocard in 2023.

The girocard is on the decline: In the future, the giro card will no longer be free at ING Diba. From March 2022, it should cost 99 cents a month.

As “finance scene“Reports, it emerges from the ING Diba price-performance index that the new fee of 99 cents per month, i.e. just under 12 euros per year, should apply per card and not per account. So for accounts that are managed jointly, the costs can also be doubled or tripled. However, customers have the option of canceling their cards from December and thus avoid the fee.

However, customers must first agree to these changes. ING Diba is obliged to obtain consent. “We will inform our customers in advance in the coming days that we will contact them from the end of November 2021 to agree the new conditions with them. Against the background of the ruling by the Federal Court of Justice, we will also obtain your consent to certain past changes, ”a spokesman told the“ financial scene ”. However, a lack of consent could lead to the termination of the contract on the part of the bank.

Is the end of millions of giro cards threatened? Mastercard wants to abolish Maestro – and is forcing banks to use new cards

If ING Diba enforces the new fees with all 2.9 million of its Girocard users, this would bring in an annual EUR 34.8 million Girocard fees with a rounded figure of 12 euros.

The Visa debit card, which is also part of the account, should in turn remain free of charge. It is intended to be the card that is mainly used by customers. With the Visa card, customers can pay and withdraw worldwide. Unlike a credit card, the Visa debit card will debit the money from your account promptly. Visa cards are also more often compatible with online payment systems.

But the girocard is not only on the decline at ING Diba. Deutsche Kredit Bank, Comdirect and Consorsbank have also announced and have already implemented some of their plans to offer the Girocard only for a fee or as an option.

This development away from the girocard is likely to have been intensified immensely by the announcement of Mastercard. From July 2023, Mastercard does not want to issue any new Maestro girocards. Mastercard will then also rely on a debit Mastercard and will therefore undoubtedly drive even more banks to switch.
