The popular Czech comedy Pupendo is surrounded by a number of interesting facts that you may not have heard about, as well as a few mistakes that may have escaped your attention. Next time you watch, keep an eye out and you might discover more.
Mixed reactions to an overall well-reviewed film
The author team of the famous Czech comedies Pelíška (1999) and We must help each other (2000) brought another successful spectacle in 2003, which entertains viewers to this day. Perhaps no film is complete without certain missteps and mistakes that occurred during filming and were gradually discovered by attentive viewers over the years.
V Pupendu but there are not many of them, respectively The Czech-Slovak film database records only six of them. Just on this website focused on film and series production the film holds a favorable rating of 75% and ranks among the most popular despite the fact that the reactions of the audience are not always enthusiastic.
“I prefer that movie to Beds.”
It seems to me that it is an attempt to repeat the success of the previous one in the form of Pelíšké, which usually has no general results. Except for a few moments, it is a forgettable film with lackluster performances, but above all the script.
“A very good film that had eluded me until now. I see the greatest strength of the film in the excellent acting of the central foursome and in the funny script and dialogues parodying the socialist era and the various types of characters of that time.”
Filming was complicated by floods
Part of the exteriors was supposed to be filmed on Libeň Island, but due to floods, this area ended up under water. Director Jan Hřebejk was therefore forced to choose other locationsbut he later returned to this location with the film U mě dobrý (2008).
Most of the errors discovered so far apparently surround the character of Vládi Ptáčník performed by actor Pavel Liška. He says, for example, that the commander of the military western circuit is Colonel Sochor, who, however, died in the 1950s. At the time that Vláďa is talking about, the commander was actually General František Veselý. Another error can be noticed in the scene where Vláďa talks about his German shepherd in the car. Other cars follow them, but after a while they mysteriously disappear.

Pupendo, Pelíšky and other film treasures that remind us of a totalitarian regime

The creators originally considered Matěj Ruppert for the character of Vlad, but in the end they came to the conclusion that Pavel Liška is more suitable for her. Her final form was actually created thanks to him, right during the filming. He himself once remarked that about half of the character was made up on the spot. In the script, he often had, for example, a single sentence that he could rely on, and then he improvised.
Even Míla Břečka (Jaroslav Dušek) could not avoid mistakes, for example when he wrote “a message to future generations”. At the time, he was holding the pen point up, so she would have stopped writing if he tried to scribble such a long message with it. However, one much more famous scene is associated with the given character – the one from the pool. It was spinning all day, and even though Dušek was wearing a wetsuit and the water reached a pleasant 28 °C, he got so cold that he couldn’t even speak. Therefore, the shooting had to be postponed to the next day.
