At the Marche-en-Famenne vaccination center, two people from the Rochefort region received a second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine after receiving the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. It is a human error, according to the Walloon vaccine officials.
The two people had presented themselves at the center on Tuesday at 9 am, although they had booked an appointment in the afternoon for their second shot. “It is a combination of circumstances,” says Laurent Briou, director of WEX Marche-en-Famenne.
“These two have not arrived at the right time, have not presented their Pfizer vaccination card and have joined the AstraZeneca vaccination line. The incident occurred on a day when we alternated between the two vaccines: AstraZeneca in the morning and Pfizer in the afternoon. ”
The WEX director acknowledges that the administrative check has not been carried out thoroughly enough. “We should have been stricter. By the way, the procedures have been tightened up after this incident. ”
The doctor associated with this vaccination center, Dr. Delrée, points out that these people are not at risk. However, it is possible that they will be invited again, for a third injection. The competent Walloon government service also reassures the population that such a mixture of vaccines does not pose a risk.
The University of Oxford, which collaborated with AstraZeneca on the development of the vaccine, is conducting research into the interchangeability of different vaccines.
