Errani and Vavassori win mixed doubles at US Open

Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori make history at the US Open. The Romagna native and the Piedmontese are in fact the first all-Italian pair ever to win a mixed tournament in a Grand Slam tournament. The Italian duo, in the final played at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, defeated the Americans Taylor Townsend and Donald Young with the score of 7-6 (0) 7-5. After the tie break of the first set won to love, Errani and Vavassori did not stop, dominating the match until the 4-1 of the second, but then they suffered the opponents’ comeback (4-4) before managing to close the match.

It is a great satisfaction for two tennis players who have always worked hard, and ultimately have never received the media visibility they deserved. Both are coming off a great season, although more unfortunate for the Piedmontese called Wave who, paired with Simone Bolelli, reached two Slam finals (Australian Open and Roland Garros) without the final seal. Now he can rejoice, right at the last Major of the year.

Instead, for Sara Errani, it is the sixth Slam. But she will remember this 2024 as the best of her life: the Slam final at Roland Garros, the victory at the Rome International and the Olympic gold with Jasmine Paolini are the three pearls that have embellished this final part of her career: Errani is 37 years old, even if she seems much younger.

In the history of the Slams there were two ‘Italian’ successes in mixed doubles so far: Nicola Pietrangeli at Roland Garros 1958 with the British Shirley Bloomer, and Raffaella Reggi at the US Open 1986 with the Spaniard Sergio Casal. Errani has already won 5 Slam events and a gold medal in women’s doubles in her career; for Vavassori it is the first title in a Major. The Piedmontese had lost two finals (at Roland Garros and at the Australian Open), both played in this 2024.
