Eropa Lemparkan Bom Baru ke Apple, Bikin Geleng-Geleng Kepala

Europe Throws New Bomb at Apple, Leaving Heads Shaking

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Apple and the European Union have been in contention for the past year. This is because the European Union requires all cellphones sold in its countries to use a USB-C port.

The rule seems to specifically ‘attack’ Apple. The reason is, only Apple uses the Lightning port. The new Android cellphone manufacturers are already compact with USB-C.

The next round of battle is now targeting HP batteries. The European Union recently approved rules requiring HP manufacturers to use removable batteries.

This rule actually doesn’t only ‘make it difficult’ for Apple, but also other cellphone manufacturers. The reason is, it has been more than a decade since the era of removable batteries ended.

HP manufacturers, including Apple, have long adopted built-in batteries that integrate with devices. There are several reasons.

First, HP planting can save space. As a result, HP can be thinner and easier to carry everywhere.

Second, the technology embedded in the implanted battery allows for a longer lifespan. In addition, the built-in battery also allows for wireless charging features such as MagSafe which is placed on the back of the iPhone.

The rules regarding removable HP batteries will take effect from 2027, quoted from Cnet Thursday (22/6/2023).

Over the next three years, HP companies will inevitably have to change their designs in order to continue selling in the European Union.

Even though this rule only applies in Europe, it is possible for citizens of other parts of the world to feel it too. This is because HP manufacturers will certainly be more efficient when making uniform products compared to each country.

For users, actually this removable battery mechanism can be ‘beneficial’. The reason is, if there is a problem with the battery, there is no need to go to a repairman or replace the cellphone. Just buy a new battery and replace it yourself.

However, it is not yet clear whether this detachable battery mechanism will make the HP price more expensive or make the HP design more ‘bulky’.

How will the EU’s new rule mandating removable batteries for HP manufacturers impact Apple and other cellphone manufacturers?

Europe Clashes with Apple Again: New Rules on HP Batteries

Apple’s ongoing battle with the European Union continues, as the EU recently approved rules mandating removable batteries for HP manufacturers. While this move doesn’t specifically target Apple, it does have implications for the company.

The EU’s previous requirement for all cellphones sold in its countries to use a USB-C port was seen as a direct hit on Apple, as the company exclusively uses the Lightning port. In contrast, most Android cellphone manufacturers have already adopted USB-C.

Now, the focus has shifted to HP batteries. Starting in 2027, HP manufacturers will be required to use removable batteries, a practice that has largely been abandoned in the industry for over a decade.

For Apple and other cellphone manufacturers, this rule poses a challenge. The integration of built-in batteries with devices has become the norm for several reasons. Firstly, it allows for thinner and more portable devices. Secondly, built-in batteries often offer better technology and longer lifespans. Additionally, they enable features like wireless charging, such as Apple’s MagSafe.

Over the next three years, HP companies will need to modify their designs to comply with the EU regulations if they want to continue selling in Europe. While this rule only applies to Europe, there may be global implications as HP manufacturers will likely opt for uniform product designs to streamline production.

For users, the option of removable batteries can be advantageous. It allows for easier battery replacements, saving them the trouble of visiting repair shops or buying new phones altogether.

However, it remains to be seen whether this change will increase the price of HP devices or result in bulkier designs. Only time will tell how this regulation will impact the industry.
