Nyon (AP) – Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi and Kevin De Bruyne can hope for the award as European Footballer of the Year.
German players or Bundesliga professionals, on the other hand, are not among the three finalists for the award on August 31 in Monaco, as the European Football Union announced. Former Bundesliga players Haaland from Norway and De Bruyne from Belgium won the Champions League for the first time with Manchester City last season. Argentinian world champion Messi has just moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Inter Miami in the USA.
National player Ilkay Gündogan, who came to FC Barcelona from Manchester City in the summer, missed the chance to be honored in the draw for the Champions League group stage when he finished fourth. Pep Guardiola (Manchester City), Simone Inzaghi (Inter Milan) and Luciano Spalletti (SSC Napoli) are the finalists for the European Coach of the Year award.
Last year, striker Karim Benzema was honored by Real Madrid as the best player, and Carlo Ancelotti was honored as a coach after the Spanish top club’s Champions League victory. The women’s nominees are expected to be announced next week after the World Cup final in Australia.
