The Argentine is not in the habit of stealing the headlines for the Light Blues, but on this late Saturday night at the Etihad Stadium, he is doing just that.

The scoring was not only of the very beautiful variety, glued in the longest cross from an acute angle. But it was also important.

At a time when Manchester City have a number of key players out and a tough fixture schedule, the reigning champions still managed to take three important points against one of their fiercest title rivals.

For Erling Braut Haaland, it was a harder day at work. It wasn’t about the will or the hunger.

But when he got the chance up to several times in the second half, either goalkeeper Nick Pope stood in the way, or he sent the ball wide. Frustration shone in the Norwegian’s eyes when the margins were not on his side.

– I felt I created a number of chances for Erling. He was unlucky not to score, says Phil Foden to the BBC.

Admittedly, there was little that resembled a showdown between two evenly matched top teams in Manchester on Saturday night.

Newcastle seemed affected by the gravity of the moment, even though the season is only two games old for them, and were almost never dangerous in City’s half in the first 45 minutes.

City dominated most of the time on their own turf and it felt like a matter of time before they would get a result. They got that after about half an hour.

Phil Foden used both his silky first touch and showed his sparkling overview when he found Julián Álvarez just outside the visitors’ 16-metre penalty area. The nimble little technician responded by knocking the ball into the farthest corner and sending the home fans into the sky.

– Phil is so good with his back to the goal. He moves in the spaces as we see today, and I hope that he continues like that, says Manuel Akanji to TNT Sports.

Haaland, for his part, had to endure being looked after closely by Newcastle’s centre-backs. Big physical Sven Botman and Fabian Schär did that job well too.

Only once did Haaland get a really big chance in the first 45 minutes, but the finish rolled wide of the mark.

The second half was not very different from the first.

But Haaland had far more opportunities as Newcastle had to risk more to equalise. But it was not successful for the Norwegian this evening.

The guests also did not have an impressive final sprint to salvage a point. This resulted in a 1-0 victory and a full pot so far in the Premier League for Manchester City.

– It was a tough match – as we knew it would be. City is a class team. We try to execute our plan. It got better in the second half, says Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to TNT Sports.

PS: Manchester City have won their 17 home games in all competitions in 2023. It is a new club record. The old one was 16 straight from November 2020 to August 2021 and from April to November 2022.
