Eriksson on decisive referee decision: “Is not a punishment”

Schmeichel admittedly saved the penalty in the first overtime quarter, but Kane was able to push in the return. And Denmark never came close to equalizing.

Jonas Eriksson now believes that the punishment will be questioned.

– Before the championship, the referee said “we do not want him any cheap penalties”. This is a soft penelty for me.

Eriksson had wanted to see VAR step in.

– I am most surprised and angry that VAR does not tell the judge. This determines which team goes on. WHERE should go in and look at it, he says.

– I do not think he would have blown punishment and I am convinced that VAR would not have gone in and changed it because this is not a punishment.

Sterling was asked about the penalty and the Englishman pointed out that he thought it was a right decision by the referee to blow the penalty.

– I went into the penalty area and he stretched his right leg and it touched my legs, so it was a clear penalty, he says to Uefa.
