Eriksson, Beckham also at funeral in Sweden

In Torsby, Sweden, the hometown of Sven Goran Eriksson, the funeral of the coach who passed away on August 26 at the age of 76, eight months after announcing he had an incurable disease, took place. The church was packed and screens outside to allow everyone to say their last goodbyes. Among those present was David Beckham, one of the iconic players of the England team coached by the Swedish coach from 2001 to 2006.

In the church of Fryksandeo the wooden coffin was covered with white flowers and surrounded by six candles and other wreaths. “It is a day of grief but also of gratitude,” said the priest Ingela Alvskog. Eriksson entrusted his last words to the Telegraph, a reflection on life and an invitation to always believe in it until the end, published just on the eve of the funeral. “I would like people to remember me as a good coach who tried to do his best. I hope they appreciated the fact that I was their coach. My message to everyone is: don’t give up. Never give up. It’s a message for life, life is always there and should always be celebrated.”

The coffin arrived early this morning: in the church, reserved for 200 people including family and friends (Beckham hugged Eriksson’s former partner Nancy Dall’Olio), former players (also present was a delegation from Lazio, who won the championship in 2000 with the Swede on the bench): many followed the funeral from outside while “Candle in the Wind” by Elton John resounded.
