Erik ten Hag’s Challenges During the International Break: Casemiro’s Injury and Other Absences

International break is probably not Erik ten Hag’s favourite.

Not because he dislikes a few days’ break and that some players get time off, but because he loses control over most of his biggest stars.

Now there are also reports from Brazil that Casemiro asked to be replaced in the international match against Venezuela, due to a sprain in the ankle. That’s what Brazil’s national team coach said after the match, according to Globo.

United.no itself had a scouting report on Casemiro in that match, and when he missed a tackle after 23 minutes, he was clearly in pain. He limped a little in the very first minutes afterwards, but then he continued to play for another 56 minutes after all. Thus, injury was not the first thing we thought about afterwards.

So the fact that he finally asked to be replaced does not mean that he is guaranteed to miss games for Brazil or United, but it is one more thing on an Erik ten Hag list of challenges or things to think about that in any case do not is optimal.

When the international break began, United were already missing Lisandro Martinez, Sergio Reguilon, Raphaël Varane, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo and also Jadon Sancho with injuries or for other reasons.

The list is so long that it doesn’t need to be any longer.

Brazil and perhaps Casemiro will face Uruguay in their next match during this international break, on the night of Wednesday Scandinavian time.
