Erik Karlsson, 33, is traded from the San José Sharks to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It has long been rumored that Erik Karlsson is on his way away from the San José Sharks.
On Sunday afternoon, the NHL Swede was ready for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
– It is always difficult to trade a player of Erik Karlsson’s caliber, but the trade fulfills several goals that we have, says Sharks general manager Mike Grier, according to TSN.
– We want to thank Erik for his efforts in San José over the past four years and we congratulate him on the historic 2022-23 season. We wish Erik, his wife Melinda, Harlow and Stellan the best in the future.
In Pittsburgh, he becomes teammates with, among others, Sidney Crosby. Karlsson has signed until the 2026-27 season. The contract is worth roughly SEK 120 million per year.
The NHL’s best back
In addition to Karlsson, Pittsburgh receives Rem Pitlick, Dillon Hamaluik and a draft pick (third round) in 2026. The deal involves the San José Sharks and Montreal Canadiens. In total, the giant deal includes 13 players and three draft picks.
Last season, Karlsson won the Norris Trophy, the prize for the league’s best defender. The 33-year-old also became the first NHL defenseman in 30 years to score over 100 points. He scored 101 points (25 goals and 76 assists) in 82 regular season games played.
