He has made close to 1,000 NHL games since 2007.
Between 2010 and 2023, Erik Johnson also represented the classic club Colorado Avalanche. There he was assistant team captain for several seasons and also won the Stanley Cup with the club in 2022.
But now he belongs to the Buffalo Sabers instead after his contract with the Avalanche expired this summer.
Tonight he faces his old club away from home for the first time since the move. Thus, it is the first time in almost 15 years that he stands in the Ball Arena as an opponent. This after around 700 NHL games as an “Avs” player.
Right before the match, he also met the media.
Then the 35-year-old became emotional, to say the least.
– Everyone knows what the organization means to me…, he began by saying.
“Especially for me and my family”
Then the tears began to flow, which he wiped away.
– It is…
Then the American back veteran needed to sit down to recover.
– Just give me a minute. Give me a second…, he said.
A while later, he was able to conduct the interviews and talked about his feelings about returning to meet his old teammates.
– It is special for me and my family. It will be fun to come back. It is a fantastic organization with nice people. I am happy to know that I was lucky enough to play there, he is quoted as saying Denver Post and continues:
– I’m just looking forward to being out there and playing for the amazing supporters who looked after me so well for so long. It should just be fun to come back. Denver is home to me. It’s one of the country’s finest cities, one of the best organizations… it was a great time, I’m so grateful.
