Erik Cowie from «Tiger King»: – Found dead

In September came the news that Erik Cowie, known from the Netflix series “Tiger King” had been found dead in New York. He turned 52 years old.

At the time, it was not known what caused the 52-year-old’s death, but the police stated to the celebrity website TMZ that there was nothing suspicious about the death.

However, it was unknown why Cowie, who has lived in Oklahoma, was in New York.

Now, a month and a half after the death became known, the cause of death is confirmed.

The cause of death confirmed

It was September 3 that Cowie was found dead in an apartment in Brooklyn, after the police had received a report of an unconscious person. According to New York police, the ambulance service was quickly on the scene and declared him dead on the spot.

Spokeswoman for the forensic pathologist in New York, Julie Bolcer, confirms to among others Variety that the 52-year-old passed away as a result of “acute and chronic alcohol use”.

Cowie was responsible for the animals in the park, and thus worked for Joe Exotic, also known as the “Tiger King”.

In the series, he was very open about his challenges with alcohol. In May this year, he was charged with driving under the influence of drugs in Oklahoma, but did not appear in court. He was therefore wanted by the police.

Cowie was among those who testified against Exotic in the trial against him. He then explained that he had seen some of the animals being shot and killed, which contributed to Exotic being sentenced to 22 years in prison, a sentence he is currently serving.
