Ericsson CEO opposes Swedish government ban on Huawei, ZTE – Xinhua English.news.cn

STOCKHOLM, Jan.3 (Xinhua) – Börje Ekholm, CEO of Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson, has pressured the Swedish government to repeal a ban preventing Huawei and ZTE from participating in the construction of 5G in the country, according to local newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

In his messages to Swedish Foreign Trade Minister Anna Hallberg, Ekholm called for a review of the ban issued by the Swedish Post and Telecommunications Administration, which requires operators to remove Chinese companies from local infrastructure 5G by January 2025.

In messages released by the newspaper, he said Ericsson would leave Sweden if authorities upheld the ban on Huawei and ZTE.

Ms Hallberg told Dagens Nyheter that she would not interfere in decisions about the ban, adding that she had not met Mr Ekholm.

Jacob Wallenberg, vice-chairman of the board of directors of Ericsson, also said in an interview with the newspaper at the end of December 2020, that “stopping Huawei is certainly not a good thing”.
