Jakarta Rail System Revamp: Station Closure and Airport Link Upgrades
Jakarta, indonesia – Indonesia’s transportation infrastructure is undergoing a notable transformation, with plans to overhaul the city’s rail network. Key changes include the potential closure of a commuter rail station and substantial improvements to the airport rail link.
The proposed closure of Karet Station, a commuter rail stop in Central Jakarta, has sparked discussion. This decision stems from its proximity to other stations, specifically BNI City Station, leading officials to believe that consolidating services would improve efficiency. The plan was revealed by Erick Thohir, Indonesia’s Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, following an inspection of the soekarno-Hatta Airport rail link.
Thohir highlighted the underperformance of the airport rail line, currently transporting only 1.5 million passengers annually, far below its 10 million passenger capacity. He emphasized the need for a more streamlined rail ecosystem.”This is what you said earlier about how to build an ecosystem like that. Maybe Karet (Station) will be closed,” Thohir stated during a press conference at BNI City Station on january 1, 2024.
rudi As aturridha, Director of Business and Institutional Development at PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI), the operator of the commuter rail system, confirmed the potential closure. He explained the rationale behind the decision: “The Rubber station is closed as it is indeed very close to BNI City. So if people want to go to Karet, they just have to walk. We’ve made a route to BNI City, so the traffic will be faster,” Aturridha said.
The implementation timeline hinges on the release of the 2025 Train Travel Chart (Gapeka). Simultaneously, discussions are underway to add Sudirman Station as a stop on the airport rail line. This addition aims to improve connectivity and reduce travel times for passengers arriving via the LRT (Light Rail Transit).
The goal is to significantly increase ridership on the airport rail link. Currently, only a small fraction of the 56 million annual passengers at Soekarno-Hatta Airport utilize the train. Officials aim to boost this number to 10 million passengers, or approximately 20% of the total airport traffic. Aturridha further explained the strategy: “Our plan is to stop trains from BNI City to Sudirman Station so that people from the LRT who want to go to the airport, don’t need to go to BNI City but just go to Sudirman. As the walking distance is less. And thirdly, we have also implemented dynamic pricing and there will also be progressive pricing.”
thes changes aim to improve efficiency and passenger experience. The anticipated reduction in travel time between BNI City Station and Soekarno-hatta Airport Station from 50 minutes to under 40 minutes is a key objective. The combined efforts of station consolidation and route optimization are expected to significantly enhance Jakarta’s rail network.

An Interview with Transportation Expert Sarah Wijayanti
By: Michael Thompson, Senior Editor, World-Today-News.com
Michael: Welcome, Ms. Wijayanti. Thanks for joining us today to discuss these meaningful changes to Jakarta’s rail system.
Sarah: My pleasure, Michael. I’m always happy to talk about infrastructure progress, especially in a dynamic city like Jakarta.
Michael: Let’s start with the proposed closure of Karet Station. It seems like a bold move. could you shed some light on the reasoning behind this decision?
Sarah: Absolutely. The rationale revolves around optimizing the existing network. Karet Station is vrey close to BNI City Station, leading to redundancy. Consolidating services at BNI City would streamline operations and potentially reduce travel times.
Michael: There’s also talk about adding Sudirman Station as a stop on the airport rail line. How would this benefit commuters?
Sarah: That’s a crucial improvement. Adding Sudirman Station would considerably enhance connectivity for passengers arriving via the LRT (Light Rail Transit). It would eliminate the need for them to travel all the way to BNI City Station, saving them time and reducing congestion.
Michael: And how about the airport rail link itself? It truly seems to be underperforming compared to its potential capacity.
Sarah: You’re right.Ridership is currently much lower than expected. The goal is to boost this number significantly by improving accessibility, reducing travel times, and implementing dynamic pricing strategies.
Michael: It sounds like a multi-pronged approach to revitalizing the system. What kind of impact do you anticipate these changes will have on Jakarta’s commuters?
Sarah: I beleive these changes have the potential to truly transform the commuter experience. Faster travel times, easier connections, and a more convenient network would encourage more people to utilize public transportation, easing congestion and contributing to a greener, more sustainable city.
Michael: Thank you for your insights, Ms. Wijayanti. It will be interesting to see these plans unfold and witness their impact on Jakarta’s transportation landscape.
Sarah: My pleasure,Michael. I’m optimistic about the future of Jakarta’s rail system.
