Ericka Bareigts’ victory at Saint-Denis will end 230 years of men’s majorate – News

Julie Pontalba (PCR)

First of all, the representatives of the Communists of Saint-Denis recalled “an extremely difficult context which calls us to appeasement”. It was the arrival of the coronavirus in Reunion, with the consequence of restrictive measures which meant that the deceased could not have a burial in the traditions of Reunion. The economic consequences are dramatic, with businesses shutdown and the threat of unemployment.

The PCR Section of Saint-Denis also indicates that the second round of municipal elections “takes place in more serious sanitary conditions than in the first round, because at the time we had in Reunion only 3 cases or currently we are approaching of the 500, the virus is now circulating in the population, and unlike in France the curve here never fell again.

A first since 1790

Julie Pontalba recalls all the symbolism that the elections of June 28 will have for the city of Saint Denis: “the voters will end 230 years of the male majorate”.

“Sunday, June 28, the voters of Saint Denis will most likely elect the Saint Denis for all list led by Ericka Bareigts. Voters will therefore make it possible to elect a mayor in Saint Denis and thus end 230 years of the male majorate without interruption. It is an election that will mark the history of the city, the capital of Reunion “.

In fact, since 1790, when the commune was created, only men have been elected mayors.

“Fundamental fight for Reunionese society”

“The members of the PCR are pleased to have participated in this fundamental fight for Reunionese society”, continues Julie Pontalba: “We do not forget that during the abolition of slavery, in 1848, the freed male slaves had the right to vote but not women. Our sisters had to endure almost 100 years of voting ban. We also do not forget that women in Reunion voted for the first time in the municipal election of May 27, 1945 which saw the victory of Raymond Verges as mayor and the first municipal councilors including Isnelle Amelin “. In addition, women are also present on the candidate lists, the first Reunionese candidates in the elections: Ms. Cerou, Ms. Fontaine, Isnelle Amelin, Ms. Morin, Ms. Henry, Anne Hoareau, Emilia Chanu, Alice Peverelly, Gamelle, Delpha Apollina.

“This victory will take place 20 years after the vote of the law of June 6, 2000 on the parity which contributed incontestably to a better representation of women in the political world”, adds the candidate of the list “Saint-Denis for all”.

“The participation of Nassimah Dindar can be seen as a reinforcement of this symbol of the role of women in politics, because she chaired the General Council with multiple components. She has worked with everyone and is recognized for her social policy, especially towards the elderly and disabled, “concludes Julie Pontalba.
