The ministers of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) are making various efforts to address the supply problem coal and domestic LNG. This happened after the government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources temporarily banned coal exports from January 1 to January 31, 2022.
In addition, the logistics system and infrastructure will also be improved. This was conveyed by SOE Minister Erick Thohir after holding a meeting with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Minister of Trade, the Minister of Transportation, the Attorney General’s Office, and BPKP, Monday (3/1) night.
The ministerial and institutional meeting was held after President Jokowi gave directions regarding priorities for prioritizing the fulfillment of domestic energy needs before exporting.
“Ministers related to the supply of coal and LNG to support the national electricity supply immediately divide the tasks. We at the Ministry of SOEs will improve the long-term supply contract in accordance with a joint meeting with the Attorney General’s Office and BPKP. In essence, domestic energy needs will be much more prioritized for smooth operation. development,” explained Erick Thohir in his statement, Tuesday (4/1/2022).
“In addition, we will also improve the logistics system and infrastructure to ensure that domestic coal needs are met. And according to the direction of the President, who has emphasized the commitment with the ranks of the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet to replace coal with new and renewable energy, we have also prepared a road map. green economy development and energy transition and renewable energy so that we will soon have new renewable energy,” added Erick.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the coal production target in 2022 will be higher than in 2021. The projected production target for 2022 is in the range of 637 million to 664 million tons, while the coal production target for 2021 will reach 625 million tons.
Meanwhile, domestic coal demand is also predicted to increase in 2022 with 190 million tons. This figure is an increase compared to this year’s DMO quota which reached 137.5 million tons.
Data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources also reveals that natural phenomena, such as Hurricane La Nina that hit the island of Borneo last November, increasing heavy rainfall caused the realization of coal production until early December to reach 560 million tons or around 89.6% of the target. Meanwhile, domestic coal absorption until early December had only touched 121.3 million tons, or about 88.2% of the DMO target.
During the joint meeting, it was also agreed that the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources would issue changes to the DMO which could be reviewed monthly and those who did not comply with the contract would be subject to a high penalty and even have their permit revoked.
Then, his party supports the development of exports together with the Minister of Trade as the country’s foreign exchange income by calculating how much is needed in the country. Meanwhile, with the Minister of Transportation, synergy will be carried out with the parties to handle logistics.
