Erick Thohir Estimates the Price of the Covid-19 Vaccine at IDR 440,000 per person

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The government is targeting to carry out mass immunization the Covid-19 vaccine in early 2021. Now, the government is making calculations related to the cost of vaccines per person.

Minister of State Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir said, each person needs to be vaccinated twice. The time span is around two weeks.

“So the initial calculation of the price of this vaccine is for one person, because one person needs two injections and the time lag is approximately two weeks. It costs 25-30 US dollars range“said Erick at Commission VI of the Indonesian Parliament, Thursday (27/8/2020).

This means, if converted into rupiah, then one person to be vaccinated twice costs around Rp. 440,448. This figure is obtained with the assumption of an exchange rate of IDR 14,681 per US dollar.

Erick added, PT Bio Farma (Persero) has collaborated with Sinovac regarding the raw material for the Covid-19 vaccine. If by the end of 2020 the vaccine can be produced, Bio Farma will have to buy the raw materials from Sinovac for 8 US dollars per dose.

“Indeed, the price that has been cooperated with Sinovac for 2020 is 8 US dollars per dose, but in 2021 the price is 6-7 US dollars, so there is a decrease. These are raw materials, ”said Erick.

The former Inter Milan boss revealed the reason he prefers to buy vaccine raw materials rather than what has already been made. He hopes that in the future Indonesia can make a Covid-19 vaccine independently.

“But that does not mean we want to buy expensive vaccines, because of course this vaccine is only a short term. In the future, the red and white vaccine must be done,” he said.
