Erick Thohir Disappointed in Club’s Decision to Bar Players from U-23 Indonesian National Team

Chairman of PSSI Erick Thohir stated that he knew full well that the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup was not on FIFA’s agenda. So, there is no obligation for the club to release its players to the Indonesian National Team.

Even so, Erick Thohir still harbored disappointment, because the players who were summoned actually wanted to appear, but were forbidden by the club.

This is reflected in the case of Persija Jakarta coach Thomas Doll who arrested Rizky Ridho. Then, PSM Makassar’s formation manager who did not release Dzaky Asraf to U-23 Indonesian National Team.

The two players were not released because their respective teams were still needed in the BRI League 1 2023/2024. Apart from not being on FIFA’s agenda, the AFF U-23 Cup took place while the competition was still running.

Erick Thohir questioned the reason for the ban which was carried out even though there was a wish from the players. The former president of Inter Milan knows that the championship is not FIFA’s agenda.

“What I don’t want is that they are prohibited from playing, that has individual rights, bringing red and white brings rights, if they are prohibited from playing I object,” said Erick Thohir when met at Field A Senayan, Jakarta, as reported by Suara.comWednesday (16/8/2023).

“If the player is injured, don’t, if the player wants? Please give freedom as a human being, right? We can’t just say this as a machine for personal gain,” he continued.

Furthermore, Erick Thohir is sure that the club owner will agree to release the player to the national team. Like the case of Persib Bandung, which finally wanted to let Beckham Putra go.

“I’m sure ‘let me call, the owner must be red and white’, yesterday was Persib Bandung. First Beckham Putra, it turns out Mr. Glenn (Sugita) gave me last, Mr. Glenn’s red and white means,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, in the end Rizky Ridho and Dzaky Asraf were not brought by the U-23 Indonesian National Team to the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup. The championship will take place on August 17-26.
