Erick Says Jokowi ‘Emoh’ Signs Mining Export Cooperation at G20

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

SOE Minister Erick Thohir said President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) did not want to sign cooperation on supply chains at the G20 forum some time ago. This is because there are points that require the Indonesian mining industry to be sent as much as possible.

“Mr. President does not want to sign at the G20 regarding supply chains because one of them states that the mining industry must be sent to other countries,” said Erick in a Scientific Oration at Brawijaya University, Saturday (27/11).

He said that if Indonesia continued to export raw materials, it would be no different from the time of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC).

The VOC was the largest trading company to unite the spice trade from the east to strengthen the Dutch position in Indonesia. The arrival of the VOC from the Netherlands to Indonesia was the beginning of colonialism in this country.

“So what’s the difference with the VOC coming here looking for nutmeg and spices, today it must also be opened, of course we don’t want natural resources to be used for economic growth in other countries,” said Erick.

However, that does not mean that Indonesia is anti-foreign. He said the government would keep the door open for cooperation with foreigners, but that did not mean exporting all raw materials.

“It’s time for Indonesia to become a center of economic growth, the world economy to be a part of Indonesia’s economic growth. It’s not reversed, Indonesia is just a cash cow,” said Erick.

Currently, Indonesia has banned nickel exports. Later, the government will ban the export of bauxite and copper.

Jokowi will ban bauxite exports next year. Then, the copper export ban will be implemented in 2023.

This is done so that both are processed domestically. Thus, there is added value from the products sold by Indonesia.
