Eric Piolle re-elected with 53% of the votes, the mayor’s tears after the “green wave”

Eric Piolle is re-elected mayor of Grenoble with more than 53% of the votes at the end of the second round of the municipal elections. The city councilor, who has just announced his victory, shed tears of joy after the good results of environmentalists in several cities of France.

A victory without appeal. The outgoing mayor of Grenoble, Eric Piolle, emerged largely victorious in these municipal elections with 53.13% of the votes in the second round, this Sunday, June 28. The ecologist, at the head of a broad left coalition (EELV, LFI, PCF, Génération.s, etc.), has just announced his re-election during a speech on Place Grenette.

“It is obviously symbolically very important to pass the 50%, it is not easy in quadrangular”, he commented on the microphone of France 3 Alpes. Facing him, the former mayor Alain Carignon (various right) obtains 23.44% of the votes, the deputy LREM Emilie Chalas (various center) 12.49% and the socialist Olivier Noblecourt 10.92%, according to the final results communicated by the prefecture.

“It is also a special emotion to see cities like Meylan, Saint-Egreve, Vizille moving in the metropolis, and everywhere in France with Lyon, Marseille, Strasbourg, Tours, Poitiers, friends who have won”, added the precursor of a “humanist arc”. “After showing the way in 2014, we see that it takes”, noted the city councilor who always said that he would only “two consecutive identical terms”. “The meaning of my political commitment is to give a political majority to a cultural majority that I feel is emerging”, said Mr. Piolle.

Former Minister Alain Carignon reports “a very strong abstention which poses a problem for democracy and Grenoble citizenship”. Only 35.19% of Grenoblois went to the polls this Sunday. “It poses a problem of governance. The mayor who will be elected tomorrow can no longer decide alone big decisions given this massive abstention”, he added, calling on the future elected official to consult the municipal council further and use a referendum.

Ecologist Eric Piolle is currently with his supporters on Place Grenette. The atmosphere is in full swing in the city center on this second round evening, many people are on hand to attend the mayor’s speech.

“It’s an incredible momentum”

As the green wave takes shape in several French municipalities, Eric Piolle spoke at our microphone. The elected official, usually modest, even dropped a tear at the announcement of the election of his “which” François Astorg in Annecy.

“It’s just incredible. It’s an incredible impetus, great people who mobilized to make projects that take shape everywhere. They were inspired by Grenoble, they came here, we talked. See that it works for them everywhere, it’s great “, he said, moved. The environmentalist described “people who have been involved, some for a very long time, others who did not think they were elected six months ago (…) It gives hope”.

“What we have seen for six years is a mayor who has not worked with economic players”, Olivier Noblecourt estimated on the France 3 Alpes plateau, adding that “Grenoble has fallen behind on public transport, on electric mobility” during the Piolle mandate.
