Title: Embracing History Through Humor: Eric Lauret’s Mission to Make Us Proud
Introduction
Eric Lauret, a comedian from La Réunion, has found a unique way to bring history to life through humor. His one-man show, “Atan j’explik,” delves into the forgotten heroes and untold stories that have shaped the island’s identity. By infusing comedy with historical facts, Lauret aims to not only entertain but also educate and instill a sense of pride in his audience.
Bringing History to the Stage
Lauret’s inspiration for his show came from a desire to make history more engaging and relatable. Drawing on his own experiences of disliking history classes, he sought to create a performance that would captivate audiences and highlight the rich tapestry of La Réunion’s past. By collaborating with history professors and conducting extensive research, Lauret ensures that his storytelling is both accurate and entertaining.
Giving Voice to the Forgotten
Through “Atan j’explik,” Lauret sheds light on the unsung heroes and pivotal moments that have often been overlooked in traditional historical narratives. By amplifying the voices of those who have shaped La Réunion’s history, he invites audiences to see themselves as integral parts of the island’s story. Lauret’s ultimate goal is for people to walk away from his show feeling enriched and proud of their heritage.
Embracing Identity Through Humor
Despite his initial aversion to history, Lauret’s journey into exploring La Réunion’s past has been a transformative one. By immersing himself in the island’s history and sharing it through comedy, he has discovered a newfound appreciation for his roots. Through projects like ”Y Prétan” and now “Atan j’explik,” Lauret has found a way to connect with his audience on a deeper level and foster a sense of cultural pride.

Eric Lauret’s comedic approach to history serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of storytelling in preserving and celebrating our heritage. Discover the Humorist Eric Lauret and His Unique Take on History
In the Lauret family, Eric Lauret has always been the little joke teller. Fast forward a few years, and here he is on stage, expressing his humor to a much larger audience.
With his one-man show “Atan j’explik,” the humorist answers the question “what is the purpose of History?”. Stay tuned, as here, there’s no question of listening to a monotonous 1-hour-20-minute lecture, which is everything Eric Lauret detests. He explains it to us.
“History was not my favorite subject in school. I felt like it didn’t concern me, that it was the history of others. He also meets many young people who share the same dislike, even though they watch series like The Crown or play historical video games like Assassin’s Creed!” he retorts.
With his show, he aims to make History more playful and include us in it; we are not just a small point lost in the Indian Ocean! To write it, he consulted History professors. But that doesn’t make him want to become one. He prefers to tell stories.
Thus, Eric Lauret gives a voice to the forgotten, to the heroes who contributed to making Reunion Island what it is today. And above all, he wants us to be proud of it. “We are truly part of the history of the world, of France, and even of the island. If our history is young, it is extremely rich!” he asserts. “I would love for people to feel enriched when they leave the show.”
His Revelation
But then you might ask, how does a kid who hated History classes end up creating a comedy show about it?
“I spent 8 years in Paris for my studies. Like many of us who settle in the mainland, I felt nostalgic for home. That’s how I started to take an interest in the history of our island.”
His first big revelation was reading the book “Petite histoire de grands réunionnais” by Marjorie Assani-Vignau. Then, he created the video series “Y Prétan” where he tells historical anecdotes of Reunion Island in one minute. This notably inspired his current show. Among the episodes, I had a little crush on this one (were you aware?!):
