Eric Corton can be heard three times a week on radio station KINK from 2021. The former 3FM DJ wants to enthuse listeners about music they don’t know at all, without becoming pedantic. “I just want to make you feel what I feel.”
On Friday afternoon between 4 and 6 pm Corton can be heard together with Michiel Veenstra. “Then we will not only play good music, but also confront each other with bands of which the other thinks: hey, gosh. Then we will try to convince each other.”
In addition, Corton will always pick one song on Friday and explain why it is one of his favorites. “There could be all kinds of reasons for this. It could be a piece of text, a drum part or a guitar solo, or the difficulty the singer has to get to a certain note. I’m going to fill it all up and show it.”
On Saturday and Sunday, Corton can be heard between 12:00 and 14:00 and he just wants to play as much music as possible.
‘If I want to play Barbra Streisand, that’s allowed’
During the week Corton has the necessary obligations as an actor and presenter and seems to be under the roof all week due to his radio work. In 2011 Corton said goodbye to radio station 3FM, because he missed the flexibility to do other things. In order not to end up in the same position, he has made good agreements with the radio station.
“If I can do it live, I’ll do it live. But if that doesn’t work, we’ll record it. On January 1 at 4:00 PM we will broadcast the first episode, which is live anyway.”
The collaboration between the DJ and KINK was initiated when Corton was recently a guest in a broadcast by KINK program director Veenstra. Corton, who has never presented for KINK before, is particularly attracted to the channel because he can play whatever he wants.
“Anything is possible. If I want to play Barbra Streisand, because I think you should hear that for some reason, and then continue with Slayer, then you can.”
‘Would be nice if KINK got an FM frequency’
KINK was active between 1995 and 2011 under the name KINK FM and can be listened to via DAB + since last year. The station has never been on FM, but if it is up to Veenstra, that will ever change.
In August 2022, the FM frequencies in the Netherlands would actually be redistributed, but the current FM stations want that redistribution to be postponed. State Secretary Mona Keijzer (Economic Affairs and Climate) wants to give stations an emergency extension of two to three years, in order to be able to repair the financial damage caused by the cornea crisis.
Veenstra has previously spoken out against the extension. He believes that the relevant stations could also be helped in a different way.
According to Corton, KINK is certainly eligible for an FM frequency: “The transmitter has a clear profile and there is enough clout behind it. You notice that the transmitter is growing, so a need is met. It would be very nice for the station. if that succeeded. DAB + is growing, but I believe that 66 percent of people still listen on FM radio. “
About a possible direct battle for an FM frequency between KINK and the ailing 3FM – Corton’s previous employer – the Penozaactor does not speculate.
“That battle will not come either, because 3FM is a public channel. The only thing I can and want to do now is make a nice program for KINK. My radio cradle was at 3FM for a long time, but that is no longer the station where I now. They serve a different target group. I will be 52. The listeners of KINK are mostly a bit younger, but come from the same musical angle.
“But I don’t see that as a competition at the moment. But the attitude that I had at the time and still have is the same: to show what is being made, regardless of what you will ultimately think of it.”
