The post of mayor of New York has a reputation for being one of the toughest in the United States, just after that of President. Who will be next to manage Big Apple? The vote for the democratic municipal primary, from which the next mayor will emerge, is over, but the outcome of the ballot is uncertain. Eric Adams nevertheless seems set to win. He is in the lead, at the end of the first counts, with 30.9% of the vote.

Following a trauma
Adams was born and raised in New York City. Her father was a butcher, her mother a cleaner. He is the fourth in a family of six children. As a police officer, he has endeavored to combat discrimination in the police. And for good reason: as a child, he had been confronted with the harsh methods of the police. At 15, after being arrested for trespassing in an apartment, he was hit by a white policeman, finally slowed down by a black colleague.

The decision of the teenager, very marked psychologically by the experience, was taken at that moment: he would be a police officer and could thus fight police racism from within.

New York is not the same
This man very discreet about his private life has launched in politics in 1994, running for a seat in Congress in the Democratic primaries, which he missed. After a small foray into the republican party, he returned to the Democrats to become New York senator in 2006. It was in 2013 that he was elected mayor of Brooklyn, New York’s most populous borough, with 2.59 million residents.

Managing a city, he therefore knows. He particularly activated himself to push affordable housing construction. Through forums, he encouraged the public to discuss his experiences with the police.

But violence and racial tensions are not the only evils plaguing New York. The American economic capital has recorded more than 33,000 deaths from Covid, thousands of stores have closed, and tens of thousands of well-off residents have fled. The tourists are gone, unemployment and the number of homeless has exploded. The task of the next mayor promises to be very difficult.

With 86% Democrats among party-affiliated New Yorkers, the winner of Tuesday’s primary is almost guaranteed to win the general election, held November 2, and of succeed the unpopular Bill de Blasio. But the new counting system is so complex, and counting the ballots sent by mail for Tuesday’s primary takes so long that the winner may not be announced until mid-July. If Eric Adams is elected, he will be the second black mayor of New York, after David Dinkins.
