Eric Adams will be sworn in as the next mayor of New York City in Times Square just after the glass sphere falls on New Year’s Eve, a fitting venue as the city struggles to push forward its pandemic recovery from the Omicron variant. .
The former Brooklyn Borough President said earlier this month that his inauguration would be postponed indefinitely due to the increase in COVID cases across the city. Now the location, one of the world’s most iconic New Year’s Eve spots, and the backdrop of 15,000 fully vaccinated New Yorkers will be their place.
“Times Square has long been synonymous with the New Year – a place of excitement, renewal and hope for the future. These are the same issues that animated my campaign and will inform my Mayor as I prepare to bring the city out of this challenging period, “Mayor-elect Adams said in a statement.” I am deeply honored to be officially sworn in. on this iconic occasion, and participate in the transfer of leadership that is the cornerstone of our democracy ”.
Adams will use his family’s bible to take the oath of office as he takes the oath of office as the 110th mayor of New York City. Members of your family will be available to help celebrate. Outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio is also expected to be here ahead of the sphere’s launch.
De Blasio, whose plans beyond that point remain a point of much speculation, had initially announced a “full” return of fully vaccinated crowds in Times Square to play in 2022. The Omicron variant changed that.
The mayor’s office announced scaled-down plans for the big event just before Christmas. The 15,000-person cap is a quarter of what the crossroads of the world typically sees on New Year’s Eve, though it’s a welcome sight compared to the empty, confetti-strewn streets that marked the end of 2020.
The additional COVID-19 protocol will include the use of masks for all attendees and a delayed earlier entry time of 3:00 pm, which is hours later than in previous years.
