NEW YORK – Mayor-elect Eric Adams announced that he plans to take his first three paychecks as mayor of New York City in crypto.

Responding to a tweet from Miami Mayor Francis Suárez, who said that he will take his next paycheck entirely in Bitcoin with the goal of being the first politician to do so, Adams said: “In New York we always go big, so I’m taking my first THREE Bitcoin paychecks when I’m mayor. New York will be the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing innovative industries! Just wait! “

Suarez’s tweet was posted on Election Day, but Adams didn’t comment until Thursday afternoon.

Eric Adams, a 61-year-old Democrat and former police officer who will be the second African-American mayor of New York City, defeated Republican Curtis Sliwa on Tuesday. He takes office on January 1.

Adams pledged Wednesday to be a forward-thinking, practical mayor who will “get things done” for the nation’s largest city.

But what exactly is Bitcoin? According to our sister network NBC News, it’s a type of digital currency, or “cryptocurrency,” developed by an anonymous inventor (known as Satoshi Nakamoto) in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.

“Think of digital currencies as viewing your checking account balance online; you see the number on the screen, but you don’t have the bills in your hands.” NBC News explained in a previous report.

Last month, CNBC reported that a war is brewing between the states to attract Bitcoin miners, with new data showing that many of them are heading to New York, Kentucky, Georgia and Texas.
